A women empowerment movement is launched on Instagram and women are supporting it by sharing their black and white images. With over 3 million pictures on Instagram, the black and white challenge has made its way to the limelight. Celebrities from around the world including Jennifer Aniston, Eva Longoria, Sara Ali Khan, and Sonam Kapoor have posted their black and white images.

A women empowerment movement is launched on Instagram and women are supporting it by sharing their black and white images. But what is the black and white challenge origin? The history dates back to 2011.

In 2011, the Council of Europe had brought out the “Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence” to control domestic violence on women and provide them with the required protection. We know it as the Istanbul Convention.

Over 30 countries have signed and ratified the convention, meaning; brought the convention into action. The countries which have signed but not ratified the convention are Armenia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, and the UK. Whereas Russia and Azerbaijan refuse to sign the convention.

How is Turkey becoming the centre of the black and white challenge? And why is it called black and white challenge turkey?

Recently, the Turkish government was in talks to withdraw from the Istanbul convention. A one of a kind of its document, the Istanbul convention holds women protection and curbs the rising domestic violence against them. After the news of withdrawal, protestors and especially women protestors have come out in large numbers. Protests in the country are happening and appealing to the government to not withdraw from the convention.

Ankara witnessed fresh protests on 26th July, in which thousands of women came out to support this treaty. “The state will have dismissed the responsibility that falls on them” to protect women, Cansu Ertas of the Ankara Women’s Platform told AFP.

Turkey is the epicentre of domestic violence against women in eastern Europe and has received flak for not controlling the never-ending violence on women. The Rights group “We Will Stop Femicides Platform” said 146 women were killed by men in the first half of 2020.

Recently, the murder of Pinar Gultekin by her boyfriend sparked the issue on social media. With a lack of action against the murdered by the Turkish authorities, the movement bounced on social media as the black and white challenge turkey.

The convention holds a special status in protecting women and ensuring guidelines for their safety. If they withdraw from the convention, it would lead to more killings and violence. After Poland stated that they would withdraw from the convention, the ruling right-wing party Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi’s deputy chairman, Numan Kurtulmus, described the signing of the convention as “wrong” and suggested Turkey could withdraw from it.

The black and white challenge turkey femicide on social media has brought the information to the masses. More and more women from around the world are coming out and accepting the black and white challenge.
